What Is NPR Tiny Desk? Why It's Called Tiny Desk

Tiny Desk Concerts are NPR Music's video series of short, stripped-down live sets filmed at a real office desk in Washington, D.C. The name is literal: the performers play behind a desk in the NPR Music office.

Why it is called Tiny Desk

Because the concerts really happen at a desk. The series began at the desk of All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen, and artists squeeze in between the shelves, records and knick-knacks of the NPR Music office. There is no stage and only a little amplification.

Best results: one adult, face clearly visible and facing the camera, even light, head and shoulders in frame. Avoid group photos, sunglasses and heavy filters. Your video keeps the original performance sound.

How it started

In 2008, at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Bob Boilen and NPR Music's Stephen Thompson could barely hear singer-songwriter Laura Gibson over a noisy bar crowd, and joked that she should play at Bob's desk instead. She did: her Tiny Desk Concert was posted on April 22, 2008, the first in the series.

How big it got

What started as a joke became one of the best-known live music series online. NPR passed its 1,000th Tiny Desk Concert in 2022, and artists from indie folk singers to global pop and hip-hop stars have played behind the desk.

Where the AI meme comes from

In 2023 R&B singer Charlie Wilson played a Tiny Desk set that closed with "Outstanding". In October 2026 an AI parody that swapped his band for college football teams went viral, and the Tiny Desk AI trend was born. Tiny Desk AI App lets you put yourself behind the mic in a close-up from that performance.

Is the Tiny Desk AI video official?

No. AI versions are fan edits. Tiny Desk AI App is not affiliated with NPR or Tiny Desk Concerts, and every video it makes is labeled as AI-generated.
