By the Tiny Desk AI App team · Updated October 27, 2026 · About us

When it aired

NPR Music published the concert on June 5, 2023, as part of a run of new Tiny Desk concerts for Black Music Month. Wilson, the former lead singer of The Gap Band known to fans as "Uncle Charlie", filled the office with a full band and a row of backing singers.

Best results: one adult, face clearly visible and facing the camera, even light, head and shoulders in frame. Avoid group photos, sunglasses and heavy filters. Your video keeps the original performance sound.

Set list

"Charlie, Last Name Wilson", "Computer Love", "There Goes My Baby", "I'm Blessed", "Yearning For Your Love", "Sweet Yamz" and, to close, "Outstanding". Midway through, Wilson spoke about his years of addiction and homelessness and celebrated more than two decades of sobriety, one of the most talked-about moments of the set.

The singers and band

Vocals: Charlie Wilson with backing singers Jor'el Quinn, Leah Thompson, Gia Wyre, Dodie and Angel Hines. Band: Cordell Walton (keys, music director), Rain Man (drums), Alex Williams (guitar), Stephen Johnson (keys) and Lawrence Washington (keys, bass). The packed lineup is a big part of why the meme works: there are a lot of faces to swap.

How it became a meme

In October 2026 an AI edit replaced the performers with college football teams that had just lost, and the clip went viral on TikTok. People now search "charlie wilson tiny desk ai", "charlie wilson tiny desk template" and "charlie wilson tiny desk meme" to make their own.
